Maria Sharapova, former world No. 1, finally gained revenge over Zheng Jie, from China, as she reached the second round playing in the Bank of the West Classic being held in Stanford, winning with great tennis scores for all her tennis betting fans.
Russian fifth seed, Sharapova, lost to Zheng in their previous hard-court encounter three months ago, but triumphed in this encounter 6-4, 7-5. Sharapova’s return to a hard court surface this past Tuesday night playing at the oldest women-only event to be held on the tennis calendar was a total success for tennis betting fans.
When Sharapova reached the quarterfinals last year of the American tournament as she continued her slow and tedious recovery from shoulder surgery she never thought that she would make a solid start in her preparations for this year’s U.S. Open, doing this by beating the world No. 23 with great tennis scores.
The 23-year-old Sharapova will play the unseeded Olga Govortsova from Belarus next.
“Our match at Indian Wells was a really scratchy match. I wasn’t playing very well there,” Sharapova said.
“Today I served really well but returned quite poorly. I returned well when I had to, but I’ll work on that going forward. Improving with every match is really the goal, and working myself towards the Open.”
The defending champion Marion Bartoli also made progress by beating the American Ashley Harkleroad with great tennis scores 6-1, 6-4, this definitely sets up the clash with Ana Ivanovic, former world No.1, who participates due to a wild card handed to her.
“I’m desperate to be back in the final of a Grand Slam. That’s my main goal,” said French fourth seed Bartoli, runner up at the 2007 Wimbledon. “My second goal is to have a one digit ranking, but that will come with my results.”
The American teen athlete, Melanie Oudin, the same player who upset Sharapova’s dream run to last year’s U.S. Open quarterfinals, came up with a remarkable escape when playing against Aleksandra Wozniak. Trailing behind the 2008 Stanford champion by a set and 5-1, the 19-year-old Oudin made an incredible comeback to win 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-3 and due to the phenomenal tennis scores earned a deserved clash with eighth seed Victoria Azarenka.
